and Clothing

A roof that doesn’t leak, a floor that holds up, a working door and front steps, a wheelchair ramp, new plumbing, glass for windows, standardized electrical wiring -- these are among the housing repairs provided to poor families and frail elders in communities of rural Alabama served by the Missions.

Through outreach ministries in four counties, Sisters and staff offer assistance to needy families and elders for home repairs, replacing home appliances, and helping with rent.

Edmundite Missions volunteers repair a roof in rural Alabama. In eastern Wilcox County, the staff started the Pine Apple Rural Housing Ministry, an outreach to poor families and seniors. Directed by Doris Smith, Missions’ Outreach Minister, the board reviews applications, visits homes, and hires local contractors to repair homes—primarily trailers—to habitable conditions. Many times contractors train local people to do the repairs. Most homes require new roofs, replacing floors and walls from water damage, replacing rotten plumbing and installing safe electrical systems.

In Lowndes, Dallas and Monroe Counties, Sisters offer housing assistance from repairing or building porches and ramps, plumbing, electrical and other home repairs for qualifying families and seniors.

Families who lose everything in burn outs or tornadoes also receive assistance with housing and replacing needed goods.

In addition, the Missions assist with school uniforms, offer clothing, furniture, blankets, household items and personal necessities at affordable prices or at no cost:
